I purchased my gammon set about 4 months ago, first of all the assembly instructions provided in the box are worthless. I also picked up Tommy Igoe's getting started on drums dvd, which walks you through assembly step by step.

I'm going to go through everything about this drum set piece by piece, because some things are great and some things are terrible.

The drums shells themselves are made of nato wood, which has similar sonic properties to mahogany so you're going to get good lows out of you're bass drum and floor tom but the rack toms could sound much better. The biggest problem i have with this kit are the bass drum spurs: they aren't quite long enough and I've had to set them on top of a bunched up throw blanket to raise the drum up to where it's supposed to be and keep it from sliding forward on me. Also the rack toms only have 5 lugs each, making it more difficult to tune.

I really hate the sound of the snare drum, it's hard to describe but it's most likely due to the choice of nato wood again. I replaced it after about a month with a poplar one that sounds worlds better, at the very least it needs a better head put on it.

If the cymbals are a big selling point for you prepare to be disappointed. At first i thought that since it's just me and my friends jamming in the basement i wouldn't care if they didn't sound very good, but not only do these sound bad, the hi-hats actually hold you back when you start trying to experiment with them. They don't vibrate, they wobble, and it's impossible to learn certain techniques with them because you can't tell if you're doing it right or not if it sounds like crap no matter what. Also, the bottom hi-hat started to buckle around the hole after only a few days of playing normally. If you can stand them, great, but if not you're going to find yourself spending around [...] on one of the starter packs from meinl, zildjian, or sabian...

The hardware that comes with it is double braced and sturdy. The cymbal stand doesn't have a plastic sleeve, but instead has two small metal sleeves that may cause harm to your cymbals and the threads on it are a nonstandard size so you won't be able to screw anything onto it other than the wingnut that comes with it. The Hi-hat stand is nice, you can rotate the legs around for a double pedal to fit if you get creative and remove a screw, the spring is already feeling like it's losing its bounce though. I have absolutely no complaints about the snare stand, it does the job perfectly with no issues.

If you weigh over 150 lbs be prepared to buy a new drum throne too, I weigh 180 and the legs bent up under my weight and the vertical post had to be bent back into shape daily until the whole thing came apart altogether.

Looking back I most likely would have been better off buying a shell pack for the same price and getting the hardware separately. I would have paid roughly the same price and would have ended up with a nicer kit. Sure, it's an all inclusive pack, but I ended up having to replace almost all of it... Look at this as a shell pack rather than as a whole kit when comparing prices, and make you're decision with that in mind.

I purchased this set of drums with the intent on getting an entry-level full size set of drums for my son, who is turning 12. After looking at prices and comparing what was included in the purchase price, this seemed like the best choice. It was a little intimidating when the set came completely unassembled in 3 boxes, but ended up being a lot easier than I thought. Now, I've never owned drums before, but I am a small time musician/producer and I was incredibly pleased with the drum set once I got it all together, fiddled with the tuning of it, and got to tap on it for a while. Really fun and doesn't seem obviously cheap. I could upgrade the cymbals and drum heads later if I want to, which is really cool if he (or I) want to keep on going with it, and I think at least I will! A good product for a good price!

I'm only just starting out as a drummer. So I bought these for practice. They are very good looking drums and quite sturdy and well-made for the price. Although, having said that I'm not sure if they are sturdy enough to be used as performance drums. There do have some weaknesses. They are sturdy enough for "sane" use, but if someone plans on abusing them I don't think they would take too much punishment.

Overall though, I am very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the hardware and the drums themselves. They are much better than I had expected for the price.

I tuned them to their shells. In other words, I took the empty shells, hung them free, and used the kick drum beater to rap on them and recorded the "tones" they made. Then I placed the drum heads on and tuned those to the same pitch. This was a procedure that I learned from a drum manufacturer. This method of tuning worked very well with these drums and I am very well pleased with their sound, timber and pitch.

For someone just starting out on the drums, these drums are great!

By the way, they sound great, and they aren't that flimsy. So they can be used as performance drums. They just aren't going to stand up to neglect and abuse. If they are treated as a musical instrument they should be just fine.
